A 2,000-year metallic fever
The Wanshan mercury mines represent one of the longest-running industrial operations on Earth. Mining for cinnabar (HgS), the primary ore of mercury, began here as early as the Qin Dynasty (221 B.C.). For centuries, the bright red mineral was crushed to produce vermilion pigment and heated in a process called smelting, or roasting, to release liquid mercury. This elemental mercury was a main component in traditional Chinese alchemy, where it was believed to be an ingredient in elixirs of immortality.
The scale of production was immense. From the early Ming Dynasty until 1949, an estimated 8,000 tons of mercury were produced. In the modern era, from 1950 until the mines' closure in 2003, another 21,300 tons were extracted, making Wanshan the largest mercury production center in China. The entire mining complex features an astonishing 970 kilometers of underground tunnels.
This long history of mining and smelting, however, came at a steep environmental cost. The roasting process, which involves heating cinnabar to temperatures between 500 and 600°C, releases mercury as a vapor that condenses into liquid form. Inevitably, large quantities of mercury vapor escaped into the atmosphere, while waste rock and slag containing residual mercury were left in enormous piles, exposed to the elements. These waste heaps became persistent sources of contamination, leaching mercury into the soil and surrounding river systems, including the Xiaxi and Aozhai watersheds.
The body's permanent record
The legacy of Wanshan's mercury production is written in the landscape, and in the bodies of the people who live there. Scientific studies have used human hair as a bioindicator to measure long-term mercury exposure. Hair incorporates mercury from the bloodstream as it grows, providing a reliable timeline of exposure.
A 2009 study of two villages in the Wanshan area revealed a clear geographic pattern of contamination. Residents of Da-shui-xi Village, located closer to the mining operations, had an average total mercury concentration in their hair of 5.5 micrograms per gram (μg/g). Residents of Xia-chang-xi Village, situated farther away, had a lower average of 3.3 μg/g. For comparison, a study of residents in Beijing found mercury levels around 1.3 μg/g. Miners showed the highest exposure, with hair mercury contents hundreds of times higher than normal.
The primary routes of exposure are the consumption of contaminated rice and fish. Inorganic mercury from the mine waste is converted by bacteria in the paddy fields and rivers into methylmercury, a more toxic organic form that bioaccumulates up the food chain. Studies show that methylmercury accounts for about 40-44% of the total mercury found in residents' hair. This chronic exposure is linked to kidney damage and other serious health issues. Today, the former mining area has been converted into the Wanshan National Mine Park, a tourist site that grapples with the complex industrial and environmental history of the region.
