Nerdy Planet is a travel app for the intellectually curious. It helps you discover science museums, historical landmarks, observatories, and other places worth visiting. This policy explains what data we collect, why, and how it is handled.
Nerdy Planet exists in two places: the Android app and the website at nerdyplanet.app. This policy covers both. Where a practice applies to only one of them, it says so.
When you create an account, we store your email address, display name, and an optional profile (username, bio, website, avatar). Passwords are hashed by our authentication provider and are never stored in plain text.
We store places you mark as favorites, places you mark as visited (with optional ratings and notes), and collections you create. This data is tied to your account and is private by default. You control what is visible to others through your privacy settings.
The app uses your device's location only when you tap the “Near Me” button to find nearby places. Location is requested on demand and is not tracked in the background. The last map position you viewed is saved locally on your device to restore the map when you reopen the app. This is never sent to our servers.
The website lets you read a limited number of articles per month before asking you to sign in. The count of articles you have read is stored in your browser's local storage on your own device. It is not sent to us and is not tied to your identity. Clearing your browser data resets it.
Nerdy Planet is free, and ads pay for the servers and the content. Ads are served by Google.
The app shows ads through Google AdMob. To do this, Google may access your device's advertising ID — a resettable identifier that is not tied to your name or email — along with coarse device and app information, to select ads, measure performance, and limit how often you see the same ad.
You can reset or delete your advertising ID at any time in Android Settings → Privacy → Ads. Deleting it tells apps to stop using it for personalized advertising.
The website shows ads through Google AdSense. Google and its partners may set or read cookies(and similar browser storage) to serve and measure ads. Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads based on your visit to this site and other sites on the internet.
You can opt out of personalized advertising at Google Ads Settings, or opt out of third-party vendor cookies at aboutads.info.
If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, or Switzerland, we ask for your consent before using cookies or advertising identifiers for personalized ads, through a Google-certified consent interface. You can change or withdraw that choice at any time from the privacy or consent option in the app settings or the website footer. If you decline, you will still see ads, but they will be non-personalized.

We use privacy-focused product analytics to understand which features are used and where people get stuck — for example how many people opened the map or read an article. This is collected in aggregate. We do not use it to build advertising profiles, and we do not sell it.
Account and activity data is stored in a cloud database hosted by Supabase, which runs on Amazon Web Services (AWS) infrastructure. All data is encrypted in transit (HTTPS) and at rest.
Row-level security policies ensure that each user can only access their own data. Your favorites, visited places, and collections are not visible to anyone else unless you explicitly make your profile public or share a collection link.

Article images are loaded directly from their source (for example Wikimedia Commons), which means those providers receive your IP address when an image loads.
We do not sell your personal data, and we do not share it with third parties beyond the services listed above.
Nerdy Planet is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, please contact us so we can remove it.
If we make changes to this privacy policy, we will update the date at the top of this page. For significant changes, we may notify you through the app.
