A Map Etched in the Desert
In the arid coastal plain of Peru, the Nazca culture created hundreds of enormous geoglyphs between 500 BCE and 500 CE. These figures, known as the Nazca Lines, cover an area of about 450 square kilometers (170 square miles). The designs range from simple geometric shapes like trapezoids and spirals to depictions of animals such as a 135-meter (443-foot) condor and a 93-meter (305-foot) monkey. The Nazca people made the lines by removing the reddish-brown, iron-oxide-coated pebbles from the desert surface to expose the lighter-colored subsoil beneath. The trenches are typically shallow, only 10 to 15 centimeters (4 to 6 inches) deep. The region's dry and stable climate has preserved these remarkable drawings for nearly two millennia.
The Water Seeker Hypothesis
While many theories exist, one compelling interpretation connects the lines to the region's most precious resource: water. The Nazca plain is one of the driest places on Earth, receiving less than an inch of rain per year. Researcher David Johnson began investigating in the 1990s and proposed that the geoglyphs are a large-scale map of underground water resources. This theory suggests a direct link between the lines and the locations of aquifers—subterranean layers of water-bearing permeable rock.
According to this hypothesis, the trapezoidal shapes often point toward wells, while figures like the hummingbird geoglyph indicate giant wells with their beaks. This system would have been essential for survival, guiding the Nazca to reliable water sources. The theory gains support from its connection to the puquios, a network of ancient aqueducts and wells built by the Nazca to sustain their agriculture. Many of these puquios, 36 of which are still in use today, appear to be connected to some of the lines. Satellite imagery has confirmed that the distribution of puquios aligns with underground water channels, supporting the idea that the Nazca had an advanced understanding of their region's hydrology.
Competing Interpretations
The water theory is not universally accepted, and other explanations persist. German mathematician and archaeologist Maria Reiche, who dedicated her life to studying the lines, theorized they formed a massive astronomical calendar. She, along with historian Paul Kosok, noted that some lines converge at the points of the summer and winter solstices. Reiche suggested figures like the giant monkey could represent constellations, such as Ursa Major. Another prominent theory, advanced by archaeologist Johan Reinhard, posits that the lines were sacred paths for religious rituals. This interpretation suggests the geoglyphs were used in ceremonies to worship deities associated with water and agricultural fertility. While the true purpose remains debated, the connection between the lines, water, and survival in the harsh desert environment is a strong component of the mystery.
