The Coolest Lava on Earth
Ol Doinyo Lengai is the only active volcano on Earth that erupts natrocarbonatite lava. Unlike the planet's other active volcanoes, which produce molten rock with silica, this Tanzanian volcano's lava is a carbonate-based liquid. This unique composition gives it properties unseen anywhere else. The eruption temperature is remarkably low, typically between 500°C and 600°C. Basaltic lavas, like those in Hawaii, erupt at over 1,100°C.
The lava's appearance is deceptive. During daylight, its molten form looks like fluid black oil or dark mud. It only emits a faint, dull red-orange glow in the dark of night. Because it contains almost no silica, the lava has an extremely low viscosity, sometimes flowing with the consistency of water. This allows it to move faster than a person can run. A striking feature occurs after eruption. The lava's primary minerals, nyerereite and gregoryite, are anhydrous and unstable in the atmosphere. When exposed to moisture, they undergo a rapid chemical reaction, transforming the black lava into a white, powdery substance within hours or days.
Mountain of God in the Great Rift Valley
Situated south of Lake Natron, Ol Doinyo Lengai is a stratovolcano that rises 2,962 meters (9,718 feet) above the floor of the Gregory Rift, part of the East African Rift system where the continent is actively splitting apart. The volcano has been intermittently active for about 15,000 years, though the oldest pyroclastics date back as far as 370,000 years. Its eruptive style alternates between effusive periods, producing natrocarbonatite lava flows within its northern crater, and more violent explosive phases that can eject ash clouds. A major explosive eruption in 2007-2008 significantly deepened the summit crater.
For the local Maasai people, the volcano holds deep cultural importance. They call it Ol Doinyo Lengai, which translates to "Mountain of God," and believe it is where their deity, Engai. The mountain is a sacred site where prayers and rituals are performed. The unusual carbonatite ash enriches the surrounding grasslands, creating uniquely succulent pastures that are a nursery for the annual wildebeest migration.
