A Caustic Chemical Cauldron
Lake Natron is a shallow salt lake in the eastern branch of the East African Rift. It is an endorheic basin, meaning no rivers flow out of it, so water only leaves through evaporation. This process concentrates high levels of salts and minerals. The lake's water is extremely alkaline, with a pH that can reach 10.5 or even 12, nearly as basic as ammonia. Temperatures in the shallow water frequently exceed 40°C (104°F) and can reach 60°C (140°F).
The lake’s unique chemistry comes from the surrounding geology and a nearby, very unusual volcano. The area sits on a tectonic plate boundary, the East African Rift System, and is shaped by volcanic processes. The bedrock is composed of alkaline lavas rich in sodium carbonate but low in calcium and magnesium. Hot springs feed the lake, adding to its mineral load. The primary source of the lake's alkalinity is Ol Doinyo Lengai, the world's only active volcano that erupts natrocarbonatite lava. This rare lava is low in silica and rich in sodium and potassium carbonates. Ash from Ol Doinyo Lengai washes into the lake, creating a caustic solution of natron (sodium carbonate decahydrate) and trona (sodium sesquicarbonate dihydrate). This is the same sodium carbonate mixture the ancient Egyptians used for mummification.
Life in the Extreme
The lake's harsh environment is inhospitable to most life. However, it is a haven for extremophiles—organisms adapted to extreme conditions. The water's high salinity supports vast blooms of salt-loving microorganisms called haloarchaea, along with cyanobacteria like Arthrospira fusiformis (spirulina). These organisms contain photosynthetic pigments that produce the lake's deep red and orange colors.
This microbial soup is the food source for up to 2.5 million Lesser flamingos (Phoeniconaias minor), representing about 75% of the global population. Lake Natron is the most important breeding site in the world for this species. The caustic water protects them from predators, creating a safe nursery. The flamingos have evolved tough, scaly skin on their legs to prevent chemical burns and possess special glands to excrete excess salt. They build their nests on small islands of mud that appear during the dry season. A few other species persist, including the endemic alkaline tilapia fish species, Alcolapia latilabris and Alcolapia ndalalani, which live in the slightly less harsh waters near hot spring inlets.
The lake is famous for its "petrified" animals. Birds and bats that die and fall into the water do not decompose in the usual way. The high concentration of sodium carbonate acts as a preservative, calcifying their bodies as they dry. This process leaves behind eerie, statue-like carcasses along the shoreline.
