A navigational trap
Beneath the coral-draped edge of Sipadan Island, at a depth of 20 meters (about 65 feet), is the entrance to a submerged limestone cave system. This is not a mythical turtle graveyard where the old and sick come to die, but a natural trap. The current scientific understanding is that sea turtles, primarily Green (Chelonia mydas) and Hawksbill (Eretmochelys imbricata) turtles, swim into the cavern, perhaps to rest or hide from predators. Once inside the maze-like passages, they become disoriented in the darkness. Unable to find their way back to the surface for air, they drown.
The cave's main entrance is on the side of a sheer limestone wall that drops 600 meters (2,000 feet) to the seabed. After a large entrance chamber, the system narrows into a complex network of tunnels. The remains within are well-preserved. Many skeletons are found fully articulated, resting on the fine, silty sand of the cave floor. This high degree of preservation is due to the absence of strong currents and large scavengers within the enclosed system.
The site was famously documented by Jacques Cousteau's team in the 1989 film "Borneo: The Ghost of the Sea Turtle," which brought global attention to this unusual phenomenon. A sign bearing a skull and crossbones warns recreational divers at the entrance, as the cave is accessible only to those with proper cave-diving certification and equipment due to its complexity and the risk of silt-outs, which can reduce visibility to zero in seconds.
The geology and other victims
Sipadan is Malaysia's only oceanic island, a pinnacle formed by living corals growing atop an extinct volcanic cone that rises from the floor of the Celebes Sea. This unique geological formation created the sheer underwater walls and the limestone cave system that houses the turtle tunnels. The cave itself is a labyrinth, with passages that twist and turn, leading deeper into the island's foundation.
Turtles are not the only air-breathing marine animals to fall victim to the cave's confusing layout. In a deeper chamber, approximately 150 meters (492 feet) from the entrance, lies the complete skeleton of a dolphin. Like the turtles, it is believed to have entered the cave system and failed to find its way out before needing to surface. The cave's still, dark environment preserves these remains, recording the animals that made a final, fatal navigational error. Divers have also observed smaller cave-dwelling life, such as blind cave shrimps and flashlight fish, living among the skeletal remains.
