A Parasite in Disguise
The Rafflesia is a plant that is hard to define. It has no leaves, no stem, and no roots. For most of its life, it exists as a network of thread-like filaments completely inside its host—a specific vine from the genus Tetrastigma, which is related to grapes. This internal, absorptive organ is called a haustorium, and it siphons all water and nutrients from the host vine. The Rafflesia is a holoparasite, meaning it is completely dependent on its host for survival. It does not photosynthesize and has even lost the chloroplast genome that makes it possible.
The name "Dipterocarpus Parasitic Rafflesia" is a common misnomer. Rafflesia grows within the lowland rainforests of Borneo, which are characterized by towering Dipterocarp trees. The parasite's flower erupts from Tetrastigma vines that climb these trees, but it does not infect the Dipterocarps themselves. For years, the parasite's growth is completely hidden, a silent infiltration of another plant's vascular system.
The Corpse Flower's Bloom
After years of internal growth, the Rafflesia prepares to reproduce. A small bud, resembling a cabbage, pushes through the bark of the host vine. This bud slowly swells for about nine months before it is ready to open. The bloom, when it happens, is rapid. The flower unfurls its five thick, reddish-brown lobes, revealing a deep central chamber. A fully grown Rafflesia arnoldii, the largest species, can reach a diameter of over 100 centimeters and weigh up to 10 kilograms.
This massive flower has a single purpose: to attract pollinators for the brief 4-7 days it will be viable. To do this, it emits a powerful odor of decaying meat, earning it the nickname "corpse flower." Some species can even generate heat, further mimicking a fresh carcass. This olfactory deception lures carrion flies (from genera like Chrysomya and Lucilia). The flies, expecting to find a meal or a place to lay eggs, crawl inside the flower. In a male flower, they are smeared with a thick, viscous pollen fluid. For reproduction to succeed, a fly must then visit a female flower within the short blooming window, a rare event that makes pollination infrequent.
