An Orchid Out of Time
Deep in the shaded, humid understory of Borneo's montane rainforests grows Neuwiedia zollingeri, a plant that is different from an orchid. This terrestrial herb belongs to the subfamily Apostasioideae, recognized as the earliest-diverging lineage among all living orchids. The entire genus Neuwiedia contains only about nine species, making this a rare and ancient group.
Unlike its more famous epiphytic relatives, N. zollingeri grows on the forest floor, with tall, leafy, semi-woody stems and pleated, lance-shaped leaves. It produces an erect, unbranched spike of nodding flowers, which are typically a pale to golden-yellow color. The plant is found across Southeast Asia, including in the ecosystems of Kinabalu Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Sabah. This park alone contains over 4,500 species of flora and fauna, and is a global biodiversity center.
The Ancestral Blueprint
The flower of Neuwiedia zollingeri shows orchid evolution. Its most significant feature is the presence of three fertile stamens (the pollen-producing organs). This is different from more than 99% of orchid species, which possess only one stamen that is fused with the female parts into a complex structure called a column. The three stamens in Neuwiedia are a primitive trait, a link to the lily-like ancestors from which orchids evolved.
The pollen itself is different. Instead of being packed into waxy masses called pollinia, the pollen of N. zollingeri is powdery and unconsolidated, another ancestral characteristic. The flower's six tepals (three sepals and three petals) are all very similar, lacking the highly modified petal, or labellum, that most orchids use to attract and guide pollinators. This simple, radially symmetrical flower structure reveals what orchids looked like before they developed their famously complex forms and specialized relationships with insects. The species is named for the 19th-century Swiss botanist Heinrich Zollinger, who explored its native habitat.
