A forest carved from stone
The surface of Tsingy de Bemaraha National Park is a formidable area of limestone spires. In the Malagasy language, "tsingy" means "where one cannot walk barefoot," an apt description for the razor-sharp rock formations that can tower up to 100 meters high. This dramatic topography began forming around 200 million years ago when layers of calcite settled at the bottom of a Jurassic lagoon, creating a vast limestone bed. Tectonic activity later uplifted this plateau, and millions of years of heavy monsoon rains dissolved the rock, carving deep canyons and leaving the harder limestone standing as dense pinnacles.
Beneath this imposing surface lies a second, hidden world. The same erosion that sculpted the peaks also created an extensive subterranean network of caves, fissures, and underground rivers. Water vanishes from the surface, draining through the porous karst terrain into these hidden channels. Major rivers, like the Manambolo, have carved immense gorges up to 300 meters deep through the plateau, feeding this complex and largely unexplored plumbing system. This subterranean drainage makes the Tsingy an important water source for the entire Antsalova region.
Life in permanent darkness
The underground rivers and caves of Bemaraha contain ecosystems completely isolated from the sunlit world above. In the permanent darkness, life adapts in unusual ways. The most common inhabitants are troglobites—animals that live their entire lives in caves. Among these are species of blind cave fish, such as those from the genus Typhleotris. One specific species found in Madagascar's subterranean waters is Typhleotris madagascariensis, a fish that is blind and lacks any skin pigmentation.
This fish, which can grow to about 8 cm, has evolved to navigate and hunt without sight. Its sensory organs for detecting water pressure and vibrations are highly developed, allowing it to find the invertebrates that make up its diet. These subterranean ecosystems do not rely on photosynthesis. Instead, the food web depends on nutrients washed in from the surface or on bacteria that can metabolize minerals directly from the rock and water. This has led to a high degree of endemism; about 85% of the species in the park are found nowhere else on Earth, and many of the cave dwellers are unique to this specific underground system.
