The 160-kilogram Primate
Archaeoindris fontoynontii was the largest primate to ever evolve on Madagascar. Weighing an estimated 160 kilograms (350 pounds), it was comparable in size to an adult male gorilla. This immense animal belonged to a now-extinct family of lemurs known as Palaeopropithecidae, or "sloth lemurs." The name refers to their robust skeletons and features suggesting a slow, deliberate lifestyle, similar to the giant ground sloths of the Americas.
Its anatomy points to a life spent both in trees and on the ground. The creature's arms were longer than its legs, a trait useful for a powerful climber. The hip joints also showed adaptations for climbing. Despite its bulk, Archaeoindris was not purely terrestrial. It likely moved slowly through the woodlands and savannas of Madagascar's central highlands, foraging on a diet of leaves, seeds, and fruit. Analysis of its teeth suggests a predominantly folivorous diet, meaning it primarily consumed leaves. Relatively small eye orbits in its 269-millimeter-long skull indicate it was diurnal, active during the daytime like modern gorillas.
Fossil evidence for Archaeoindris is exceptionally rare. All known remains have been discovered at a single subfossil site, Ampasambazimba, in the central plateau. The first description came from Herbert F. Standing in 1909, based on fragmentary jaws. Later, a complete skull was found, but only six bones from the lower skeleton have ever been formally identified. This scarcity of remains makes every bone a critical piece of evidence for understanding this vanished giant.
Extinction of a Giant
Radiocarbon dating of Archaeoindris bones confirms its survival into the relatively recent past. One specimen was dated to between 761 and 388 BCE, and another to between 412 and 199 BCE. These dates show that the giant lemur was still alive when the first humans colonized Madagascar, an event now dated to as early as 10,500 years ago. For millennia, humans and megafauna appear to have coexisted on the island.
The extinction of at least 17 species of giant lemurs, along with other large animals like elephant birds and pygmy hippos, coincides with a later shift in human activity. Around 1,000 years ago, evidence for forest clearing with fire and the introduction of cattle herding increases dramatically in the archaeological record. This widespread habitat alteration, combined with hunting pressure, proved catastrophic for slow-moving and large-bodied species like Archaeoindris. By the time of its extinction around 350 BCE, it was likely already a very rare animal. Its demise was part of a major extinction event that permanently altered the ecology of Madagascar.
