A Cretaceous Pompeii
The Sihetun fossil beds are part of a larger geological unit called the Yixian Formation, a layer of rock dating to the Early Cretaceous period, between 125 and 123 million years ago. This area of northeastern China was once a dynamic environment of lakes, coniferous forests, and active volcanoes. The exceptional quality of the fossils is a direct result of this volcanic activity. Repeated eruptions blanketed the ecosystem in fine-grained ash, burying plants and animals with such speed that soft tissues like feathers, skin, and even the remnants of an animal's last meal were preserved. This type of remarkable preservation earns the site the designation of a Lagerstätte—a sedimentary deposit that exhibits extraordinary fossil completeness.
The discovery of these beds by local farmers in the 1990s triggered a "fossil gold rush," transforming paleontology and our understanding of the age of dinosaurs. The first feathered, non-avian dinosaur, Sinosauropteryx, was found here in 1996, confirming the link between dinosaurs and birds. The fossils from Sihetun provide a complete snapshot of an ancient environment, capturing everything from insects and fish to the dominant dinosaurs and pioneering mammals.
The Jehol Biota
The collection of organisms found here is known as the Jehol Biota. It includes an incredible diversity of life. The headliner is Confuciusornis sanctus, one of the earliest known birds to possess a modern, toothless beak. Hundreds of specimens have been found, showing that these crow-sized birds likely traveled in large flocks. Some fossils even preserve a pair of long, ribbon-like tail feathers, which may indicate they belonged to males.
Beyond Confuciusornis, the beds have yielded a menagerie of other feathered dinosaurs. Sinosauropteryx was a small, fast carnivore about a meter in length. Microscopic examination of its fossilized filaments revealed preserved pigment-bearing organelles called melanosomes. Analysis of these structures showed that Sinosauropteryx had a reddish-brown color, with a raccoon-like bandit mask and a striped, ginger-and-white tail. Other finds include the four-winged Microraptor and early tyrannosauroid Dilong.
The fossils also reveal complex interactions between species. One of the most stunning discoveries is a fossil of the badger-sized mammal Repenomamus robustus locked in combat with a beaked dinosaur, Psittacosaurus. The mammal is preserved biting the dinosaur's ribs, providing direct evidence that some Mesozoic mammals actively hunted dinosaurs. Other Repenomamus specimens contain the fossilized remains of young dinosaurs in their stomachs.
