An unexpected discovery in a collapsed cave
In September 1984, students from Peking University excavating a collapsed limestone cave at Jinniushan, or "Golden Ox Mountain," made a remarkable find. Unearthed from the sediment were the partial remains of a single archaic human. The discovery was exceptionally complete for a hominin of this age, consisting of a cranium, vertebrae, ribs, a left hip bone (innominate), and various hand and foot bones. Uranium-series dating of the site places the fossil at approximately 260,000 years old, from the Middle Pleistocene epoch.
Initially, the fossil's robust features led researchers to believe it was a male, nicknaming it "Jinniushan Man." However, a 2006 analysis of the pelvic structure confirmed the individual was a female. She was a young adult, likely between 20 and 30 years old at the time of her death. Estimates of her body mass are around 78.6 kg (173 lb), making her one of the largest female human fossils ever found. This large body size is consistent with adaptations to the cold, high-latitude climate of Pleistocene China.
A mosaic of ancient and modern traits
The Jinniushan skeleton is a puzzle for paleoanthropologists. It has a mix of features from both older hominins like Homo erectus and anatomically modern Homo sapiens. Its cranial capacity is estimated to be around 1,330 cubic centimeters, well within the range of modern humans and significantly larger than the average for Homo erectus. The skull also shows some modern traits, such as relatively thin cranial vault bones and less pronounced brow ridges compared to other archaic humans of the period, like the Dali Man.
However, the skeleton also retains primitive characteristics. These include a low forehead and a broad facial structure. This combination of traits challenges linear models of human evolution. Instead, the Jinniushan woman suggests a complex picture, where different human populations in Asia may have interbred, leading to mosaic morphologies. Her unique anatomy is a data point for understanding the diverse hominin environment of Middle Pleistocene East Asia, a history distinct from that documented in Europe and Africa. The site also yielded stone tools and evidence of fire use, showing that these hominins hunted and gathered their environment.
