A Cretaceous Snapshot
In northeastern China's Liaoning province, layers of rock from the Early Cretaceous period tell an extraordinary story. Known as the Jehol Biota, this fossil assemblage dates from about 135 to 121 million years ago and represents an entire ecosystem. The fossils are found within the Yixian and Jiufotang Formations, which are made of finely laminated lakebed sediments layered with volcanic ash. During this period, the region was a dynamic area of lakes, forests, and volcanoes.
The unique geology led to exceptional fossil preservation. Fine-grained volcanic ash periodically settled in the lakes, burying organisms quickly and gently in an environment with low oxygen. This process prevented decomposition and scavenging, preserving bones and soft tissues like feathers, hair, skin, and even stomach contents. This quality of preservation makes the Jehol Biota a Lagerstätte, a deposit of exceptionally preserved fossils, and one of the most important paleontological sites in the world.
A Feathered Revolution
The discoveries at Jehol changed our understanding of dinosaurs. The first non-avian dinosaur confirmed to have feathers, Sinosauropteryx, was unearthed here in 1996. Its body was covered in simple, filament-like feathers. Microscopic structures called melanosomes preserved in the fossilized feathers revealed its coloration: a reddish-brown, striped tail and a raccoon-like bandit mask.
Other famous finds include the Microraptor gui, a small dromaeosaurid with four wings. It had long, asymmetrical flight feathers on both its arms and legs, suggesting it could glide between trees. Analysis of its melanosomes indicates its plumage was iridescent, similar to a modern crow. The fossils are so detailed that one specimen was found with the remains of an extinct bird in its stomach, confirming its tree-dwelling, predatory lifestyle.
The ecosystem also preserved a huge diversity of early birds. Hundreds of specimens of Confuciusornis have been found, a crow-sized bird that was the earliest known to have a toothless beak and a pygostyle, the fused tail vertebrae that support tail feathers in modern birds. Many fossils show two long, streamer-like tail feathers, which may have been a feature of males for courtship displays. The biota also includes early mammals, insects, fish like the index fossil Lycoptera, and some of the earliest known flowering plants, such as the aquatic Archaefructus.
