A Landscape Shaped by Erosion
The Glass House Mountains are not volcanoes, but rather the solidified magma chambers that remained after the volcanoes themselves vanished. Around 26 to 27 million years ago, during the Oligocene Epoch, this region of eastern Australia passed over a hotspot in the Earth's mantle, triggering volcanic activity. Magma, rich in silica, pushed up through the Earth's crust into a thick layer of softer Landsborough Sandstone.
This molten rock was primarily composed of trachyte and rhyolite, viscous lavas that do not flow easily. The thick magma created slopes, the thick magma solidified in the vents and chambers beneath the surface, forming hard, dense intrusive plugs. Over millions of years, the softer sandstone and the outer pyroclastic layers of the volcanoes eroded away, leaving behind the much more resistant volcanic cores. Today, thirteen of these dramatic plugs rise abruptly from the coastal plain, with the tallest, Mount Beerwah, reaching an elevation of 556 metres. Geologists estimate the peaks may be only a third of their original height.
Columns of Cooled Magma
The geology of the peaks reveals details of their formation. Several mountains, including Mount Beerwah and Mount Ngungun, have distinct vertical columns, a feature known as columnar jointing. This pattern formed as the large bodies of lava cooled and contracted, creating fractures in the rock. The northern face of Mount Beerwah has a prominent example of these formations, sometimes called the "Organ Pipes".
The specific mineral composition varies between the peaks. Mount Beerwah is composed almost entirely of trachyte. Mount Tibrogargan, standing at 364 metres, is made of alkali rhyolite. Other peaks contain comendite, a specific type of peralkaline rhyolite. This collection of exposed plugs is one of the examples of an eroded central volcano complex in Australia.
The unique shapes of the mountains were noted by Lieutenant James Cook on May 17, 1770. He named them the "Glass Houses" because their forms resembled the glass-making furnaces in his native Yorkshire. The peaks have much older names and deep cultural significance to the traditional landowners, the Gubbi Gubbi and Jinibara peoples. In local Aboriginal tradition, the mountains are a family, with Mount Beerwah being the mother and Mount Tibrogargan the father.
