The Singing Revolution
Off the eastern coast of Australia, male humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) participate in one of the most extensive and rapid cultural exchanges in the animal kingdom. Within a given population, all males sing the same complex song during the breeding season. But these songs don't stay local. Newer research, much of it led by bioacoustician Dr. Ellen Garland, has tracked how entirely new songs, or "song revolutions," sweep through populations across the South Pacific.
A new song often originates in the humpback populations of Western Australia. This new "hit single" then appears in the waters off Queensland and the east coast. From there, it spreads relentlessly eastward. Studies analyzing song recordings over more than a decade revealed this consistent, unidirectional pattern of transmission. A song that debutes in Australia can completely replace the local song in French Polynesia—over 6,000 kilometers away—within just two years. This rapid adoption of a new, complex behavior across thousands of miles is cultural transmission similar to humans.
How a Song Travels
Humpback whale song is not random collection of sounds; it has a hierarchical structure. The smallest components are individual "units" of sound. These units are arranged into repeating "phrases," which in turn are repeated to form "themes." A complete song consists of several themes sung in a specific order and can last from 10 to 30 minutes, often repeated for many hours.
This complex information is transmitted horizontally, or learned from peers, rather than being innate. Whales learn the new hit songs on shared migration routes or on feeding grounds in Antarctica, where different populations mix. Researchers hypothesize that the eastward flow is driven by population size; the larger eastern Australian population has a greater cultural influence on the smaller populations to its east.
The transmission is remarkably precise. Whales in New Caledonia were found to learn the Australian songs without simplifying them or omitting any parts. In some rare instances during a transition period, researchers have recorded "hybrid" songs, where a whale splices themes from the old song with themes from the incoming new one, showing the learning process itself. This evidence shows whales may learn songs in segments or "chunks," similar to how songbirds learn their calls and human infants acquire language. The vocal connectivity is so effective that themes have been tracked spreading over 14,000 kilometers, from Australia to Ecuador.
