A new branch on the family tree
In the foothills of Siberia's Altai Mountains is Denisova Cave, a site that has fundamentally altered our understanding of human history. The cave's deep, stratified deposits preserve a near-continuous record of occupation stretching back 300,000 years. In 2008, Russian archaeologists excavating in a layer designated as "Stratum 11" uncovered a tiny fragment of a finger bone. This fossil, labeled Denisova 3, was sent to the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany, for genetic analysis. The results, published in 2010, were astonishing.
The mitochondrial DNA extracted from the bone did not match that of Neanderthals or anatomically modern humans (Homo sapiens). It belonged to a previously unknown lineage of ancient humans. The group was named "Denisovans" after the cave of their discovery. Subsequent analysis of the nuclear DNA confirmed they were a sister group to Neanderthals, with their common ancestor splitting from the line leading to modern humans over 550,000 years ago. The cave's cool, stable environment provided the perfect conditions for preserving this ancient DNA, revealing the genetics of a lost human population. The oldest Denisovan fossils found in the cave date to around 200,000 years ago.
A Pleistocene meeting point
Denisova Cave was not the exclusive home of any single group. Deeper analysis of the fossils and sediment layers has revealed a complex history of occupation. Both Denisovans and Neanderthals used the cave intermittently for hundreds of thousands of years. The most direct evidence of their interaction came from a 2.5 cm bone fragment found in 2012. This fossil, known as "Denny" or Denisova 11, belonged to a 13-year-old girl who lived approximately 90,000 years ago. Genetic sequencing showed she was a first-generation hybrid: her mother was a Neanderthal and her father was a Denisovan. This remains the only first-generation hybrid hominin ever discovered.
The cave's occupants also left behind a collection of artifacts. Pendants made from animal teeth and sophisticated bone points have been dated to between 43,000 and 49,000 years ago. One of the most remarkable finds is a polished bracelet made from dark green chlorite, which may be up to 50,000 years old. A finely crafted sewing needle made from bird bone, also dated to around 50,000 years ago, is one of the oldest of its kind ever found. While no Homo sapiens fossils from this period have been found in the cave, the advanced nature of these items complicates who made what, and when. The genetic legacy of the Denisovans persists today. Modern Melanesian populations have up to 6% Denisovan DNA, and many East Asian people also carry their genes. A specific Denisovan gene variant, EPAS1, which helps with adaptation to low-oxygen environments, is common in modern Tibetans, providing a clear example of inherited advantage from interbreeding events tens of thousands of years ago.
