The Pleistocene palette
In the limestone formations of the Altai Mountains, artists of the Upper Paleolithic period created galleries of ancient life. Around 15,000 years ago, during the late stages of the last Ice Age, they left behind images of the animals that dominated their world. The most prominent among these was the elk (Cervus elaphus sibiricus), a large cervid well-adapted to the cold steppe environment. The earliest rock art in the Altai region realistically portrays these animals, often in profile, alongside other now-extinct megafauna like the woolly rhinoceros and mammoth.
The artists worked with a limited but effective palette derived directly from the earth. They manufactured pigments by grinding minerals into a fine powder. Red and yellow colors came from iron oxides like hematite and goethite, collectively known as ochre. Black was sourced from charcoal from their fires or from manganese oxide. These ground pigments were likely mixed with a binder, such as water or animal fat, and applied to the cave walls using fingers, pads of fur, or primitive brushes.
Accompanying the animal figures are non-figurative markings. These include dots, grids, zigzags, and other geometric shapes. Perhaps striking are the handprints left on the walls. These were often created as negative stencils, where a hand was placed against the rock and pigment was blown around it, leaving a lasting silhouette and a connection to an individual who lived hundreds of generations in the past.
A 500-generation legacy
The Altai caves that contain this art were galleries; they were active sites of human life. Archaeological excavations at locations like Denisova Cave reveal dozens of layers of sediment preserving a record of occupation stretching back hundreds of thousands of years. While the 15,000-year-old art is the work of anatomically modern humans (Homo sapiens), these same caves were previously home to other hominins. Denisova Cave is famous for providing the first fossil evidence of the Denisovans, a distinct human species, and was also inhabited at times by Neanderthals.
The art shows the Late Pleistocene ecosystem. The realistic depictions of elk and other large mammals show a detailed knowledge of animal anatomy and behavior. These were the animals that sustained the hunter-gatherer populations in a harsh subarctic environment. The creation of this art required significant effort, from sourcing and preparing pigments to working in dark, often hard-to-reach chambers.
The remarkable preservation of these images is due to the stable interior environment of the limestone caves. The consistent, low temperatures and protection from the elements have allowed delicate paintings made from simple mineral compounds to survive for millennia. These sites are now managed by research institutions like the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
