Bronze Age Industrial Metallurgy
In the steppes of East Kazakhstan, remnants of ancient industrial activity are found in the area. The Karakol site contains furnaces used for smelting copper ore approximately 3,000 years ago, during the Late Bronze Age. These operations were part of the wider Andronovo cultural-historical community, a collection of peoples who flourished across vast areas of the Eurasian steppe from around 2000 to 1150 BCE. The Andronovo people were skilled metallurgists who mined local deposits of copper ores like malachite and cuprite. The furnaces they constructed were simple but effective, likely pit or shaft furnaces that allowed for a technological leap in metal production.
Archaeometallurgists study the waste products of this ancient process, particularly the slag, to reconstruct the technology used. Slag is the glassy byproduct that forms when impurities in the ore, known as gangue, melt and separate from the liquid copper. The mineral composition of this slag is a geological thermometer, recording the conditions inside the furnace. Analysis shows the Karakol furnaces reached and sustained temperatures of 1,200°C. This temperature is significant because it is well above the melting point of copper (1,085°C) and was hot enough to create a fluid, low-viscosity slag that efficiently separated from the metal. Achieving this required a forced air draft, supplied by bellows, and high-quality charcoal as fuel.
