The gharial's last stand
The gharial (Gavialis gangeticus) is the last surviving species of the family Gavialidae, an ancient line of crocodilians. It is distinguished by its extremely long, thin snout, an adaptation for a diet consisting almost entirely of fish. An adult male can reach up to 6 meters in length and develops a bulbous growth on the tip of its snout that resembles an Indian pot, or "ghara," giving the animal its name.
By the 1970s, the species was on the verge of extinction. The global population, which was estimated between 5,000 and 10,000 in the 1940s, had collapsed by over 96% to fewer than 200 individuals. The causes were a combination of hunting for skins, egg collection for food, and, most critically, habitat loss from the construction of dams and barrages. In response, the Indian government launched Project Crocodile in 1975 to save the country's three crocodilian species. The National Chambal Sanctuary, a 5,400 square-kilometer protected area spanning three states—Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan—was established in 1979 as the primary refuge for the remaining gharials. Today, the Chambal River holds approximately 80% of the world's wild gharials.
A fragile recovery in the Chambal
The core of the recovery program is a "rear and release" strategy. Conservationists collect eggs from nests dug into riverside sandbanks, a single clutch can contain 30-50 eggs. These are transported to hatcheries where they are incubated under protected conditions, shielding them from predators and poaching. After hatching, the young gharials are raised in captivity until they are large enough to have a better chance of survival in the wild, typically over 1 meter long. Since the program's inception, more than 5,000 captive-reared gharials have been released back into India's rivers, with the majority going into the Chambal.
This intensive effort brought the population back from the brink. The recovery, however, is precarious. The same threats that caused the initial decline persist. Illegal sand mining on the riverbanks destroys the gharials' nesting sites. Water extraction for irrigation and industry alters river flows, creating shallow areas that gharials cannot use. Entanglement in fishing nets remains a constant danger, as the animals easily drown. These ongoing pressures mean the gharial's survival is dependent on continuous monitoring and active habitat protection.
