From Zero to Thriving
By early 2009, Panna Tiger Reserve was declared tiger-free. A history of systematic poaching had completely eliminated the local population of Panthera tigris tigris. In response, Indian conservation authorities launched an ambitious reintroduction program in March of that same year. The plan was to move tigers, but to establish a new, genetically robust population.
The first founders arrived shortly after. A female tiger, designated T1, was translocated from Bandhavgarh National Park. She was soon joined by another female, T2, from Kanha National Park, and a male, T3, from Pench Tiger Reserve. This selection was deliberate, sourcing animals from three distinct populations to maximize the genetic variability of the new group. Over the next few years, the founding group grew to a total of seven tigers, five females and two males. The first litter of cubs was born to T1 on April 16, 2010, a definitive sign that the reintroduced animals were adapting.
A Genetic Success Story
When a population is rebuilt from a very small number of individuals, it creates a genetic bottleneck. This event dramatically reduces genetic diversity, which can make the population more susceptible to disease and inbreeding depression. Initial scientific models for Panna predicted a slow recovery of this essential diversity. Long-term monitoring using non-invasive techniques like fecal DNA analysis revealed a different story. The genetic admixture resulting from the diverse source populations increased the new population's potency. One study found the mean litter size in the new population was 2.66, higher than the 2.3 observed in the original Panna population. The careful selection of founders paid off, allowing genetic diversity to recover more quickly than anticipated. Researchers also found no evidence of mating between close relatives, indicating the tigers have an innate mechanism for avoiding inbreeding, which is important for the long-term health of the population.
From the initial seven founders, the population has grown remarkably. By 2021, the park had 59 individuals, and by 2023, the number had reached 42 adults with more than 15 cubs. The annual population growth rate was calculated at approximately 26%. The entire program is a model for science-based conservation and ecological restoration.
