A traveler's grave
In May 2002, archaeologists excavating a site for a new school in Amesbury, just five kilometers from Stonehenge, uncovered a grave from around 2300 BCE. The male skeleton inside, soon nicknamed the "Amesbury Archer," was buried with more artifacts than any other Early Bronze Age grave in Britain—nearly 100 objects in total. Skeletal analysis shows he was a robust man, between 35 and 45 years old at the time of his death. He lived a hard life. His bones show he suffered from a dental abscess that had eroded his jaw, and a severe, years-old injury had completely removed his left kneecap, leaving him with a pronounced limp and a chronic bone infection.
Radiocarbon dating places his life during the time when the large sarsen stones were being erected at nearby Stonehenge. The discovery shows an individual from this critical period in British prehistory. He was a traveler, but a traveler who brought new technologies to the island.
Scientific analysis points to the Alps
The most remarkable fact about the Amesbury Archer comes from the chemical composition of his teeth. Scientific analysis of oxygen isotopes in his tooth enamel shows long-distance migration. The ratio of heavy oxygen-18 to light oxygen-16 isotopes in water varies depending on the climate and geography. These ratios become locked in a person's tooth enamel during childhood. The Archer's teeth contain isotope ratios that are not found in Britain, but are consistent with the colder, high-altitude environment of the European Alps—perhaps modern Switzerland, Austria, or Germany.
This isotopic evidence proves he spent his childhood over 800 kilometers away and later traveled to Wiltshire. This makes him one of the earliest individuals identified as a first-generation migrant from the continent to Britain. His journey demonstrates that people undertook extensive travel across Europe during the Early Bronze Age. DNA analysis further confirms his continental origins, showing a higher proportion of Early European Farmer ancestry than was typical for Britain at the time.
The first metalworker in Britain?
The collection of objects buried with the Archer is exceptional. It includes five ceramic Beaker pots, 18 flint arrowheads, two stone wrist-guards (bracers) for archery, boar's tusks, and a variety of flint tools. Most significantly, the grave contained some of the earliest metal objects found in Britain: three copper knives and a pair of small gold ornaments, likely worn in the hair. These gold "hair tresses" are the oldest securely dated gold objects in the country.
The presence of a "cushion stone," a small anvil used for metalworking, suggests the Archer was a skilled smith of metal objects, but a skilled smith himself. He may have been one of the first people to bring the knowledge of copper and gold metallurgy to Britain, a technology that was already established in mainland Europe. This skill could explain his high status, reflected in the unprecedented wealth of his grave goods.
