The calculation revolution
In 1202, the powerful maritime Republic of Pisa was a hub of Mediterranean trade. It was here that a merchant's son named Leonardo Pisano Bogollo published a book that would change Western civilization. His work, Liber Abaci ("The Book of Calculation"), introduced the Hindu-Arabic numeral system to a Europe still struggling with Roman numerals. The location of this Point of Interest is near the traditional site associated with Fibonacci's home and work.
Leonardo, posthumously known as Fibonacci, spent his youth in North Africa, specifically in Bugia (now Béjaïa, Algeria), where his father was a customs official. There, he studied calculation with an Arab master and traveled to Egypt, Syria, and Greece, observing various systems of arithmetic used by merchants. He recognized the superiority of the nine Indian figures (1-9) and the concept of "zephir," or zero.
Before Fibonacci, European merchants and mathematicians used Roman numerals (I, V, X, L, C, D, M). This system lacked a place-value concept and a zero, making basic arithmetic like multiplication and division extraordinarily difficult. Calculations often required a physical abacus. Fibonacci's book demonstrated how the Hindu-Arabic system allowed for faster and more complex calculations on paper, a necessity for the expanding commercial world. Liber Abaci was not just theoretical; it was filled with practical problems for merchants concerning profit margins, interest calculations, and currency conversions.
A monument in numbers
There is no surviving house of Fibonacci. This location in Piazza della Pera, a historic square named for a pear-shaped Etruscan stone, is a spot in the city where the mathematician lived and worked. The true memorials to Fibonacci are scattered throughout Pisa and the world of science.
A formal statue of Fibonacci, sculpted by Giovanni Paganucci in 1863, stands in the Camposanto Monumentale (monumental cemetery) by the Piazza dei Miracoli. The initiative for this statue came from Florence, not Pisa. There is also a plaque on the State Archives building at Lungarno Mediceo 30, which reproduces a 1241 decree from the Republic of Pisa granting Leonardo an annual salary for his services to the city.
The adoption of Hindu-Arabic numerals was not immediate. The system took centuries to become widespread across Europe, its spread accelerating only with the invention of printing in the 1500s. Yet, the foundation was laid here in Pisa. Liber Abaci introduced new numbers; it provided the mathematical tools that enabled the complex calculations needed for the developing fields of finance, engineering, and science that would define the coming centuries.
