A river's ghost in the landscape
The Arno River flows through Florence, a feature of the city. However, the river's present course is a relatively recent development. Geological and historical analyses reveal that for much of its history, the main channel of the Arno flowed through the wide Florence-Prato-Pistoia plain, a 45-kilometer-long and 10-kilometer-wide intermontane basin. This ancient river, or paleo-Arno, was not a single channel but a braided system, with multiple, shifting watercourses spread across a bed that was up to 1000 meters wide in places. Today, the river is confined to a channel just 150 meters wide at its broadest point near Florence.
Evidence for this former course is buried beneath the modern landscape. Scientists use sediment cores and stratigraphic analysis to map the old riverbeds. These cores reveal deposits of coarse river sands and gravels in locations far from the current channel, buried under layers of fine-grained alluvial silt. These sandy deposits trace the path of the powerful paleo-Arno. Analysis of historical maps and aerial photography further corroborates the data, showing faint traces of paleo-beds that are invisible from the ground. Before extensive human intervention, the Arno's natural tendency was to occupy this wide plain to the north.
A shift forced by floods and engineering
The change from a wide, braided river to a single, fixed channel was not a single event but a long process. The river has a history of instability. Near Pisa, archaeological work has uncovered at least 16 well-preserved Roman ships. These ships were not sunk in battle but were likely destroyed and buried by catastrophic floods caused by the Arno breaking its natural levees between the second century B.C. and the fifth century A.D.
Major changes began in the Middle Ages. A series of exceptional floods, documented from the 12th century onward, pushed the river's main flow southward. The flood of 1333 was particularly destructive. These natural events initiated the avulsion, or abrupt change in course. Florentines began to exert control over the river's path. Starting in the medieval period, and accelerating through the Renaissance into the 18th and 19th centuries, a massive campaign of hydraulic engineering took place. The river was straightened, contained with embankments, and forced into its current, deeper channel. This activity was so extensive that even after World War II, intense sediment extraction from the riverbed caused the channel to incise, or deepen, by an additional 6 meters in some sections.
