A 4,000-year-old industrial complex
Accidentally rediscovered in 1987 during a landscaping project, the Great Orme mines are a massive network of tunnels and surface workings dating back 4,000 years. Archaeological investigation has since revealed over eight kilometers (five miles) of explored passages, making it the largest known prehistoric copper mine in the world. Radiocarbon dating indicates the mine's most productive period was between 1700 BCE and 1400 BCE. During this time, it is estimated that up to 1,760 tonnes of copper were extracted. This output was so significant that by 1600 BCE, other copper mines in Britain had closed, unable to compete.
The mine is located on a prominent headland of Carboniferous Limestone formed around 330 million years ago. Hydrothermal fluids passing through fractures in the rock created veins of copper minerals, primarily chalcopyrite, which was altered through geological processes into the green copper carbonate, malachite, and blue azurite. These colorful ores were the primary target for Bronze Age miners. The mine workings follow these mineral veins deep into the headland, reaching depths of up to 70 meters below the surface, stopping only at the water table. The scale of the operation suggests a structured society with a significant demand for copper, which was important for producing bronze.
Bronze Age engineering and tools
The early miners used surprisingly simple tools to extract the copper ore. Archaeologists have unearthed over 30,000 animal bones, many of which were shaped into tools for digging and scraping away softer rock. The primary tool for breaking harder rock was the stone hammer. Over 3,000 of these have been found, made from hard granite pebbles collected from local beaches. The heaviest stone hammer discovered weighs 30kg and was likely suspended from a timber frame. To break up the rock face, miners employed a technique called fire-setting. This involved heating the rock with a fire and then rapidly cooling it with water, causing it to crack and making the ore easier to extract.
Evidence from the tunnels shows the harsh conditions faced by the miners. They lit their way with candles made from animal fat. Many passages are extremely narrow, some so small that only children could have accessed and worked in them. This suggests that entire family groups, including children as young as five or six, may have been involved in the mining process. Once extracted, the ore was brought to the surface, crushed using stone pestles and mortars, and then smelted in charcoal-fueled kilns to produce copper metal.
