An impossibly large structure
In the direction of the constellation Boötes lies a structure so vast it challenges fundamental ideas about the universe. Known as the Big Ring, it is an arrangement of galaxies and galaxy clusters with a diameter of 1.3 billion light-years and a circumference of about four billion light-years. From Earth, it is 9.2 billion light-years away, meaning we see it as it was when the universe was about half its current age. If it were visible to the naked eye, its diameter would span the width of 15 full moons.
The Big Ring was identified by Alexia Lopez, a PhD student at the University of Central Lancashire, who presented the finding in January 2024. The structure is too faint to be seen directly. Instead, its existence was revealed by analyzing data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). The method involved looking at the light from extremely distant and bright objects called quasars. As light from these quasars travels toward Earth, it passes through intervening galaxies whose gas absorbs some of the light. Specifically, astronomers looked for the absorption lines of ionized magnesium (MgII), which act as a "shadow" indicating the presence of otherwise unseen galactic matter. By mapping these absorption systems, a huge, ring-like pattern emerged. Further analysis suggests the structure is not a perfect ring, has a coil or corkscrew shape, aligned so we see it face-on.
Breaking the cosmic rules
The existence of the Big Ring challenges cosmology. It directly challenges the Cosmological Principle, a foundational assumption that the universe, on a large enough scale, is homogeneous and isotropic; meaning it's roughly the same in all locations and in all directions. This principle predicts a theoretical size limit for any cosmic structure, calculated to be around 1.2 billion light-years. According to standard models, there simply hasn't been enough time since the Big Bang for gravity to assemble something larger. The Big Ring, with its 1.3 billion light-year diameter, exceeds this limit.
The Big Ring's neighbor is also cosmic neighbor. In 2021, Lopez discovered another massive object, the Giant Arc, which spans 3.3 billion light-years. The Big Ring and the Giant Arc are in the same region of the sky, separated by only 12 degrees, and are both the same distance from Earth. This proximity suggests they might be part of a single, even larger cosmological system. The presence of two such enormous structures in the same cosmic neighborhood defies statistical expectations and pushes cosmologists to reconsider the upper limits of cosmic structure formation. Alternative theories, such as those involving cosmic strings—hypothetical defects in the fabric of spacetime—or Conformal Cyclic Cosmology, are being considered to explain how such formations could exist.
