A landscape of contagion and munitions
Foulness Island is a low-lying landscape of reclaimed coastal marshland in the Thames Estuary, covering approximately 11 square miles. Its name is a modern corruption of the Old English "fugla næss," or "headland of birds," evidence of its long-standing importance as a habitat for wildfowl. The island's isolation made it a logical site for maritime quarantine. During plague outbreaks, ships bound for London were held here to wait out the disease, and the dead were buried on the island.
This history has fueled a persistent folk etymology, linking the name "Foulness" to the sickness and death it hosted. While its primary role was quarantine, the island's soil is a complex mix of natural and man-made hazards. The Ministry of Defence (MOD) has controlled the island since World War I, establishing it as a major site for weapons testing and evaluation. This century of military use has added a new layer of contamination to the area, with unexploded ordnance (UXO) from historical and ongoing operations posing a constant risk.
The proving ground
The War Office first acquired the island in 1915, and since then it has been central to British munitions development. Now known as MOD Shoeburyness and managed by the contractor QinetiQ, the site has been used for testing everything from artillery shells to atomic weapons components. After 1947, the Atomic Weapons Research Establishment (AWRE) on Foulness was responsible for assembling the high-explosive components for Britain's first atomic bomb, which was detonated in 1952.
The ground itself is a subject of scientific interest. Decades of ordnance testing have left residues and unexploded munitions across the 9,300-acre site. Bomb disposal teams conduct regular clearing operations, particularly before any construction, such as improvements to the sea defenses.
Despite the contamination, the island is a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and a Ramsar wetland site of international importance. Its estuarine habitats of intertidal flats and saltmarshes support internationally significant populations of birds, including the second-largest avocet colony in the UK. The area also provides a habitat for 71 nationally rare invertebrate species and rare plants such as spiral tasselwood.
