A Bitumen-Saturated Geology
Buton Island's asphalt is not a lake of tar but a massive geological sponge. Porous limestones and sandstones are thoroughly impregnated with bitumen, a heavy and viscous petroleum. This "rock asphalt" deposit is one of the largest in the world, with total resources estimated at 663 million tons. The asphalt itself, locally known as Asbuton, typically makes up 10% to 40% of the rock's mass.
Its formation began with crude oil. Geochemical analysis shows the bitumen is biodegraded crude oil that originated from marine source rocks of the Triassic Winto Formation. This oil migrated upwards and was trapped in younger, more porous rock layers, primarily the Pliocene Sampolakosa Formation carbonates and the Miocene Tondo Formation sandstones and conglomerates. Tectonic collisions involving the Buton microcontinent caused intense faulting and uplift. This process fractured the overlying cap rocks, exposing the trapped oil to groundwater and microbial action. Lighter oil fractions were consumed and washed away, leaving behind the heavy, dense asphalt that saturates the rocks today.
Mining and Material Science
The asphalt deposits on Buton Island have been known since the Dutch colonial era, with mining operations recorded as early as the 1920s. It is the only natural asphalt deposit mined in Indonesia. Unlike asphalt derived from refining petroleum, Asbuton is a naturally pre-mixed composite material of bitumen and mineral aggregate, mostly calcium carbonate (CaCO3).
This natural blend gives the material unique properties. Processed Buton asphalt can increase the stiffness and softening point of conventional petroleum bitumen, making road surfaces more resistant to deformation in tropical climates. Various products are made from the raw rock asphalt, including Buton Granular Asphalt (BGA) and refined versions where the mineral content is reduced. Recent technological developments have even succeeded in extracting nearly 99% pure bitumen from the rock. Despite a national processing capacity of over 1.5 million tons per year, actual production has been significantly lower. Indonesia remains a net importer of asphalt, but there are national plans to optimize Asbuton use to achieve self-sufficiency.
