An ancient toolkit for rainforest life
Deep within the equatorial rainforest of southwestern Sri Lanka, the large rock shelter of Batadomba-lena holds a remarkable record of early human ingenuity. Archaeological excavations have unearthed geometric microliths—small, meticulously shaped stone tools—dating back as far as 36,000 years. These tiny quartz implements, often only a few centimeters long, represent some of the earliest evidence for such technology outside of Africa. The discovery challenges previous timelines for complex tool manufacturing in South Asia.
The people of Batadomba-lena were anatomically modern Homo sapiens, often referred to as Balangoda Man. Skeletal remains found in the cave, dated to around 31,000 years Before Present, are among the oldest modern human fossils found in South Asia. These early inhabitants made sharp flakes; they were producing standardized geometric shapes, such as triangles and trapezoids, designed to be components of more complex tools. Made primarily from quartz, these microliths were likely hafted onto wood or bone shafts to create projectile points for hunting, such as spears or arrows. This composite tool technology shows a sophisticated understanding of materials and manufacturing processes.
