A Monkey in the Clouds
High in the cloud forests of Sri Lanka, clinging to a precarious existence, is the Rakwana Hills Purple-faced Langur (Semnopithecus vetulus monticola). This subspecies of purple-faced langur inhabits the montane forests at altitudes between 1,200 and 2,000 meters. Its long, shaggy, brown-gray fur offers insulation in the cool, misty environment, an important adaptation that distinguishes it from its lowland relatives. Also known as the Bear Monkey, it has prominent white cheek tufts that frame its dark face.
The purple-faced langur is a highly arboreal and diurnal species, meaning it lives in trees and is active during the day. Social groups are typically small, often consisting of a single adult male, several adult females, and their offspring, with an average group size of about 8.9 individuals. Their diet is almost exclusively folivorous. Young leaves make up about 39% of their food intake, with mature leaves accounting for another 40%. The remainder of their diet consists of flowers, fruits, and seeds. Their specialized, multi-chambered stomachs contain bacteria that help break down the cellulose in leaves, a digestive process that is essential for their survival.
An existence defined by loss
The history of the Rakwana Hills Purple-faced Langur is deeply connected to the history of its habitat. During the 19th century, vast swathes of Sri Lanka's hill country forests—as much as 80%—were cleared for the establishment of tea plantations. This massive deforestation event drastically reduced the available habitat for the langur, confining the subspecies to fragmented forest patches. The species as a whole (Semnopithecus vetulus) has seen its forest home shrink dramatically; Sri Lanka lost over half its forest cover between 1956 and 2003.
For the Rakwana Hills subspecies, this habitat loss is the primary threat to its survival. The montane forests they depend on recover slowly from destruction. The remaining populations are isolated, making them vulnerable to local extinction. This fragmentation prevents gene flow between groups, which is a long-term risk for the subspecies' viability. Other pressures include firewood extraction by local communities and natural forest die-backs. Unlike other langur subspecies that have adapted to live in home gardens or rubber plantations, the montane variety depends on its disappearing forest canopy. Conservation efforts are focused on protecting the remaining forest fragments and exploring the creation of habitat corridors to connect isolated populations.
