Deep within the sediments of Fa-Hien Lena, archaeologists uncovered a sophisticated toolkit that rewrites the timeline of human ingenuity in Asia. The cave contains the earliest evidence of microlith technology in South Asia, with some of these small, complex stone tools dating to between 45,000 and 48,000 years ago. These were not simple implements; the inhabitants fashioned them from quartz river pebbles collected from a nearby stream. The microliths were likely components of composite projectile weapons, essential for hunting the fast-moving arboreal prey of the dense tropical rainforest.
The oldest discovery is the world's oldest evidence for bow-and-arrow technology outside of Africa. Dated to 48,000 years before present, the finds include 130 projectile points carved from animal bone. Analysis of the fracture patterns on these points shows damage consistent with high-velocity impact, ruling out their use as spear tips. This technology allowed the cave's occupants to successfully hunt challenging prey. Faunal remains from the cave are dominated by small mammals like monkeys and squirrels, showing a specialized adaptation to the rainforest environment that persisted for millennia. Other bone tools suggest the processing of animal hides and plant fibers, possibly for making nets or clothing.
A symbolic and social world
The human skeletal remains found at Fa-Hien Lena are the oldest belonging to anatomically modern Homo sapiens in all of South Asia. Excavations have identified the fragmented remains of several individuals, including adults and children, from the earliest occupation layers. These remains show signs of complex mortuary practices. The inhabitants practiced secondary burials, a ritual where the deceased were left to decompose before their bones were gathered and formally interred within the cave. In some cases, these bones were coated with red and yellow ochre, a mineral pigment.
The symbolic life of these early people is also seen in the ornaments they left behind. Archaeologists have found beads made from marine shells and shark vertebrae. The coast is approximately 40 kilometers away, which indicates that the cave's occupants either traveled long distances or were part of a wider exchange network. They also crafted beads entirely from ochre and pierced shark teeth for adornment. These artifacts, alongside the advanced toolkits and burial rituals, show a cognitively modern people with a complex cultural world. The cave itself, also known as Pahiyangala, is one of the largest natural rock shelters in Asia, with a massive entrance reaching 53.3 meters (175 feet) in height.
