A self-perpetuating forest
The Sinharaja Forest Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the last large expanse of lowland tropical rainforest in Sri Lanka. It covers 8,864 hectares and represents a living remnant of the ancient supercontinent Gondwanaland. The forest's ecosystem is heavily shaped by trees from the family Dipterocarpaceae. These trees form a dense, unbroken canopy that can reach heights of 35 to 40 meters, with some emergent trees soaring to 50 meters. This multi-layered canopy creates a deeply shaded and humid forest floor, a condition that is essential for the forest's own survival.
The dominant dipterocarp species have evolved a specific reproductive strategy: their seeds require near-total darkness to germinate. Sunlight inhibits the process. This adaptation ensures that new seedlings only sprout in the shade provided by their parent trees. As a result, the forest actively perpetuates itself. The dense canopy creates the ideal dark nursery for the next generation, which will, in turn, grow to maintain that same canopy. This forms a stable, self-sustaining climax community. Over 60% of the tree species in Sinharaja are endemic to Sri Lanka, and within the Dipterocarpaceae family, endemism exceeds 90%.
An epicenter of endemism
The unique conditions created by the dipterocarp canopy support an extraordinary concentration of endemic species. The forest receives between 3,600 and 5,000 mm of rain annually, feeding a complex network of streams that form the headwaters for the Gin and Kalu rivers. This constant moisture and stable structure provide habitats for a vast array of life. Over 50% of Sri Lanka's endemic mammals and butterflies are found here. Sinharaja hosts 95% of Sri Lanka's endemic bird species, including the Green-billed Coucal, the Red-faced Malkoha, and the Sri Lanka Blue Magpie. Many of these birds exhibit a rare behavior, forming mixed-species feeding flocks that move through the forest together. These flocks, sometimes containing over 40 individuals from more than 10 species, are often led by the Orange-billed Babbler and the Crested Drongo. The forest's reptile and amphibian life is also notable; species like the endemic Green Pit Viper and various tree frogs thriving in the damp understory. The entire ecosystem, from the tallest dipterocarp to the smallest frog, is interconnected, stabilized by the shade-dependent cycle of the dominant trees.
