The Rainforest Social Network
In the lowland rainforest of Kitulgala, the air is filled with a constant stream of chirps, squeaks, and chattering. This isn't random noise; it's the sound of a highly organized, mobile community. Mixed-species bird flocks, a phenomenon particularly common in the tropics, are common in this forest. On average, a flock here contains about 11 different species and over 40 individual birds, moving as a cohesive unit through the understory and canopy.
These avian groups are not random collections. They have a defined structure, centered around "nuclear" species that form the flock's core. In Sri Lanka's wet zone forests, the primary nuclear species is the Orange-billed Babbler (Turdoides rufescens), a highly social bird endemic to the island. These babblers are noisy and active, moving in groups of 10 to 20 or more and constantly turning over leaves and probing bark for insects. Their foraging activity flushes out insects that are then caught by other "attendant" species.
Another player is the Greater Racket-tailed Drongo (Dicrurus paradiseus). Drongos often act as sentinels for the flock. Their sallying foraging technique, where they fly out from a perch to catch insects, gives them a wide view of the surroundings, making them excellent lookouts for predators like the Shikra hawk. The relationship is beneficial; the drongo gets access to insects disturbed by the babblers, and the entire flock benefits from the drongo's vigilance.
An Interspecies Language
The complex social dynamics of these flocks rely on a shared communication system. Research in Sri Lankan forests, pioneered by ornithologists like Eben Goodale, has shown that different species can understand each other's alarm calls. A specific warning call from a Greater Racket-tailed Drongo will cause babblers, flycatchers, and other attendant species to take defensive cover. Playback experiments, where recorded calls of one species are played to others, confirmed this interspecies understanding.
The communication is sophisticated. Birds use different calls to signal different types of threats, such as an aerial predator versus a ground-based one. This allows for a more appropriate and efficient response from the flock members. The system isn't perfect, however. Greater Racket-tailed Drongos are known for their vocal mimicry and have been observed imitating the alarm calls of other birds to startle them into dropping their prey, which the drongo then steals. This act of kleptoparasitism shows the complex and sometimes deceptive nature of these interspecies interactions.
The primary advantages for birds joining these flocks are enhanced foraging success and, most importantly, improved defense against predators. With dozens of eyes and ears on the lookout, individual birds can spend less time being vigilant and more time searching for food. This mobile, multispecies alliance shows the survival strategies that evolve within a biodiverse rainforest environment.
