A living fossil on the brink
The Chinese alligator, Alligator sinensis, is one of only two alligator species in the world, the other being its larger American cousin. This small reptile, which rarely exceeds 2 meters in length, once inhabited the extensive wetlands of the lower Yangtze River basin. Today, agricultural development has reduced its wild habitat to a few fragmented ponds in Anhui province. With a wild population estimated at 136-173 individuals, it is one of the world's most endangered crocodilians.
In response to the species' precipitous decline, the Anhui Research Center for Chinese Alligator Reproduction (ARCCAR) was established in 1979. The center started with a founder population of 212 wild-caught alligators in the early 1980s. Through focused breeding efforts, this number has expanded dramatically. The facility now houses over 10,000 alligators, protecting against total extinction. This captive population holds most of the remaining genetic diversity of the entire species.
A genetic ark
The primary challenge for the long-term survival of Alligator sinensis is its extremely low genetic diversity. Such a small gene pool increases the risk of inbreeding depression, which can lead to deformities and reduced fertility. To combat this, the breeding program is a breeding program, carefully managing the alligator's DNA to ensure a healthy future.
Scientists at the center use molecular markers, such as microsatellites and Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism (AFLP), to map the genetic profiles of the captive alligators. This genetic information allows them to act as matchmakers, pairing the most unrelated individuals for breeding. The center aims to maximize genetic variation in the offspring, producing robust individuals for reintroduction into the wild.
The reintroduction program, which began in 2003, is highly selective. Instead of releasing random alligators, researchers choose individuals whose genes can best diversify the wild population. Each released alligator is fitted with an electronic ID chip, and some receive radio transmitters, allowing scientists to monitor their adaptation and breeding success in restored habitats within the Anhui National Nature Reserve.
