An apocalypse, 445 million years ago
Around 445 million years ago, the planet experienced the first of the "Big Five" mass extinctions. The Late Ordovician mass extinction was the second-largest in Earth's history, eliminating nearly 85% of all marine species. This global catastrophe was not a single event, but a brutal one-two punch delivered over a million years.
The first pulse of extinction was likely triggered by a sudden, intense ice age as the supercontinent Gondwana drifted over the South Pole. This glaciation locked up massive amounts of water, causing sea levels to plummet and draining the vast, shallow epicontinental seas where most life thrived. The second pulse occurred as the ice age abruptly ended. Rapidly melting glaciers caused sea levels to rise, which altered ocean chemistry and circulation, leading to widespread anoxia, or low-oxygen zones. For the trilobites, brachiopods, and corals that dominated the Ordovician seas, it was a near-total wipeout.
The unlikely survivors
For decades, paleontologists considered the Hirnantian Age—the period immediately following the extinction—a global dead zone. The only significant fossil evidence from this time came from the Soom Shale in South Africa. That changed with discoveries in the bamboo forests of Anji County. Here, researchers from the Nanjing Institute of Geology and Palaeontology found a narrow band of mudstone containing an entire, exquisitely preserved ecosystem, now called the Anji Biota.
The fossils reveal a seafloor that was anything but dead. It was almost entirely dominated by sponges. Initial surveys identified nearly 100 distinct species, over 75 of which were sponges—a diversity that exceeds many modern sponge communities. This was not a struggling survivor fauna of small, stunted organisms, which is typical after an extinction. The Anji sponges were large and complex. Some formed dense forests on the seafloor, while others were more sparsely distributed. The fossils were so well-preserved that even delicate soft tissues remained. Among the thousands of sponges, scientists also found a few nautiloids and a single, complete sea scorpion, legs and all.
Architects of recovery
The Anji Biota shows how sponges capitalized on the apocalyptic conditions. They are simple filter-feeders, perfectly adapted to a world full of decaying organic matter. Their biology allows them to tolerate the wild swings in temperature and low oxygen levels that proved fatal to other organisms.
These sponges were "ecosystem engineers." Their dense communities and skeletal remains would have stabilized the sediment on the seafloor. This created a stable substrate, a physical foundation upon which other life could re-establish. Their bodies also provided a complex, three-dimensional habitat, offering shelter for other organisms to attach to or hide within. By creating these islands of stability and structure, the sponges of Anji may have actively helped the global ecosystem recover, allowing new forms of life to gain a foothold and kickstarting the return of biodiversity in the Silurian period. This pattern of sponge dominance appears to be a common feature after other mass extinctions, suggesting a recurring role for these simple animals in rebuilding a ruined world.
