The engineered illusion
West Lake appears to be a work of nature, but it is a landscape almost entirely shaped and maintained by human hands. What began as a shallow lagoon of the Qiantang River about 2,000 years ago would have long since reverted to swamp if not for over a millennium of constant hydrological management. The lake is remarkably shallow, with an average depth of just 2.3 meters and a total water capacity of about 14 million cubic meters. This low volume makes it extremely susceptible to sediment from surrounding streams, a problem that has been actively managed since at least the Tang Dynasty (618–907 AD).
The first major dredging project on record was led by the poet and governor Bai Juyi in 822 AD. He ordered the lakebed deepened and used the excavated silt to construct a causeway, later named the Bai Causeway in his honor. This project set a precedent that would define the lake's existence: dredging for removal and construction. In 1089, during the Song Dynasty, another famous poet-governor, Su Shi (also known as Su Dongpo), launched a massive dredging operation. The nearly 2.8-kilometer Su Causeway, built entirely from this dredged mud and silt, is a primary feature of the lake, complete with six scenic bridges. These causeways are not decorative; they divide the lake into smaller basins, helping to control water flow and sediment deposition.
A history written in mud
The long history of human intervention is recorded in the lake's sediments. Paleolimnology—the study of lake history through sediment cores—reveals a clear story. Analysis of pollen, diatoms, and chemical composition in these cores scientists reconstruct the environmental history of the lake and its surrounding watershed with remarkable precision. The layers show distinct changes in water quality and ecology corresponding directly with major historical events and engineering projects.
For example, sediment layers from periods of intense human activity, such as when Hangzhou served as the capital of the Southern Song Dynasty (1127–1279), show increased levels of nutrients like phosphorus and nitrogen. This indicates higher inputs from agriculture and urban settlement, leading to eutrophication—an overabundance of nutrients that can cause algal blooms. Layers corresponding to the major dredging campaigns, such as those initiated by Bai Juyi, Su Shi, and later by Yang Mengying in the Ming Dynasty (1508), show changes in sediment composition and a temporary improvement in water clarity. At least 23 distinct large-scale dredging projects have been recorded throughout history, each changing the lakebed. This continuous cycle of siltation, dredging, and construction created the area celebrated by artists and poets for centuries.
Modern management continues this tradition on an industrial scale. To combat ongoing pollution and siltation, a massive water diversion project was completed in the early 2000s. It pumps up to 400,000 cubic meters of fresher water daily from the Qiantang River into West Lake, effectively flushing the entire lake volume every month to improve water quality. This constant engineering is what maintains the "natural" beauty that made West Lake a UNESCO World Heritage site.
