An Ice Age Kitchen
Inside Xianrendong Cave, archaeologists uncovered pottery fragments that reset the timeline for human invention. Precise radiocarbon dating of bone and charcoal from the same soil layers places the oldest shards at 19,000 to 20,000 years old. This means the pottery was created during the Last Glacial Maximum, a period of intense global cold. The discovery fundamentally alters the long-held belief that pottery was invented with agriculture about 10,000 years ago. The people who made these pots were not settled farmers but mobile hunter-gatherers.
The pottery itself is simple and practical. The fragments show the vessels were bag-shaped, about 20 centimeters (8 inches) in diameter, with thick walls. They were crudely made and fired at low temperatures, making them easily breakable. Many of the sherds have scorch marks and layers of soot on their outer surfaces, direct evidence that they were placed over a fire. This was cookware, not ceremonial ware. The invention allowed people to boil, steam, and stew foods, a major advantage for extracting more calories and nutrients from available resources, especially during the harsh climate of the ice age.
Hunter-Gatherer Innovation
The creation of pottery at Xianrendong was a response to environmental pressures. During the Last Glacial Maximum, food sources were scarcer. The ability to cook food in containers would have been a significant survival advantage. In the same sediment layers as the pottery, excavators found large quantities of clam and snail shells, suggesting these were staple foods. Boiling these mollusks would have made them easier to consume and digest. Cooking could also be used to render fat from animal bones or make tough plant fibers edible.
The find demonstrates that major technological leaps are not tied to sedentary, agricultural societies. These mobile foragers developed a sophisticated solution to a pressing need. Analysis of the cave's stratigraphy (the layers of soil and debris) confirms that the pottery fragments were found in undisturbed deposits, validating their ancient age. The entire sequence of human occupation in the cave spans from about 29,000 to 17,500 years ago, with later reoccupation. The cave has also yielded a collection of stone tools, bone harpoons and needles, and animal remains that show life during the late Pleistocene.
