The Dry Zone Challenge
Wasgomuwa National Park lies within Sri Lanka's dry zone, an area defined by a prolonged dry season lasting from July to September. The park receives between 1,650 and 2,100 mm of rain annually, but this precipitation is concentrated during the northeastern monsoon from October to January. This creates a significant water-availability problem for the local flora. The average daily temperature hovers around 28°C, increasing the rate of water evaporation from the soil and transpiration from plants. The park's vegetation, classified as Sri Lanka dry-zone dry evergreen forest, contains over 150 plant species that have evolved specific methods to endure these harsh, seasonal droughts.
Survival Strategies in Wood and Leaf
The most visible adaptation in Wasgomuwa's forest is seasonal deciduousness. To prevent water loss through their leaves, many tree species shed them entirely during the driest months. This strategy is common among the dominant trees of the forest's emergent layer. Species such as Satinwood (Chloroxylon swietenia), Trincomalee wood (Berrya cordifolia), and Holoptelea integrifolia stand bare, minimizing their metabolic activity until the rains return.
Beneath the soil, different strategies are at play. Like plants in other arid regions, many Wasgomuwa trees have developed extensive and deep taproots. These root systems can access water sources far below the surface, tapping into groundwater unavailable to shallower-rooted plants. This is an adaptation seen in savanna ecosystems globally. Other plants employ wide, shallow root networks to maximize water absorption from the infrequent rainfall before it evaporates.
These adaptations in Sri Lanka's dry zone show a pattern of convergent evolution with the flora of African savannas. Unrelated species, when faced with similar environmental pressures like seasonal drought and high temperatures, independently develop similar solutions. The combination of deciduousness to reduce water loss and specialized root systems to acquire scarce water is found in both Wasgomuwa and across the savannas of Africa. Prominent tree species in Wasgomuwa that show these traits include Palu (Manilkara hexandra), Weera (Drypetes sepiaria), and Ebony (Diospyros ebenum).
