An Island Within an Island
Geologically separated from Sri Lanka's main central massif by the deep Dumbara Valley, the Knuckles Mountain Range is a distinct region. Known locally as Dumbara Kanduvetiya, or "Mist-Laden Mountain Range," its name shows the persistent cloud cover that shrouds its peaks. This constant moisture, fed by both the southwest and northeast monsoons, creates a unique climatic microcosm, distinct from the rest of the island. The range receives between 3,000 and 5,000 millimeters of rain annually, supporting a variety of ecosystems from semi-evergreen forests at lower elevations to montane and cloud forests higher up.
This geographic and climatic isolation has turned the Knuckles Range into a natural laboratory for evolution. The mountains function as "isolated mountain habitats," where populations of animals became separated, leading to the development of entirely new species. The result is an extraordinary concentration of endemic life. Of the 247 vertebrate species recorded here, an estimated 51% of reptiles and 64% of amphibians are found nowhere else on the planet. In recognition of its unique biodiversity, the Knuckles Conservation Forest was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010 as part of the Central Highlands of Sri Lanka.
A Hotspot of Unique Reptiles and Amphibians
The high rates of endemism are most apparent among the region's cold-blooded inhabitants. The range hosts 53 species of reptiles, 23 of which are endemic to Sri Lanka. A prime example is the leaf-nosed lizard (Ceratophora tennentii), an agamid lizard distinguished by a fleshy, leaf-like appendage on its snout used for camouflage. This reptile, which grows to about 20 centimeters, is entirely restricted to the cloud forests of the Knuckles Range at elevations between 760 and 1,220 meters.
Amphibian diversity is equally impressive. Twelve of the 20 amphibian species recorded in the Knuckles wilderness are endemic and endangered. One of the most notable is Kirthisinghe's rock frog (Nannophrys marmorata), a species found only in this mountain range. Many frogs in this region belong to the genus Philautus, or shrub frogs, which have a unique reproductive method. They bypass the free-swimming tadpole stage, with development occurring entirely within the egg, allowing them to reproduce away from bodies of water. This adaptation was likely a factor in their successful speciation within the isolated, moist habitats of the mountains. The flora is also exceptional, with the range containing over 1,000 flowering plant species, 160 of which are endemic to Sri Lanka.
