The Ecological Fire Calendar
The Xavante people of Mato Grosso conduct a sophisticated form of landscape management based on fire. Their practices are not random; they are timed to the nuances of the dry season and celestial patterns. Burns are typically initiated during the early and middle dry season. This timing is deliberate. The higher moisture content in the vegetation and soil leads to low-intensity, cooler fires that move slowly across the landscape. These controlled burns create a patchwork mosaic of burned and unburned areas, a result of careful attention to wind, humidity, and natural firebreaks. This technique prevents the buildup of highly flammable dead biomass that fuels large, destructive wildfires common in the late dry season.
Analysis of satellite imagery over decades confirms the effectiveness of this indigenous knowledge. One study covering 37 years of data showed that inside the Pimentel Barbosa Indigenous Reserve, deforested areas under Xavante management decreased from 1.9% to 0.6% between 2000 and 2010. By contrast, deforestation in adjacent lands managed by agribusiness surged from 1.5% to 26% over the same period. The data reveals that Xavante lands act as conservation areas, showing how traditional burning maintains ecological integrity amid widespread deforestation. This knowledge is passed down through generations, with elders mentoring younger members on the burning calendar and its connection to group hunting and ceremonies.
An Ecology Forged in Flames
The Brazilian Cerrado is a fire-dependent biome. Its native flora and fauna have evolved over millennia with the presence of fire. Many plant species possess adaptations specifically for surviving and thriving with periodic burns. Thick, corky bark protects trees, while other plants have extensive underground root and shoot systems called xylopodia that allow them to resprout quickly after a fire. Some species, like certain members of the Mimosa genus, exhibit fire-stimulated germination, where the heat is necessary to break seed dormancy. After a burn, many herbaceous species experience a synchronized, mass-flowering event.
This fire-managed landscape benefits local fauna as well. Studies have found no significant difference in the number of animals between burned and unburned areas, suggesting that wildlife is well-adapted to these cycles. Small animals find refuge from the slow-moving flames in burrows made by armadillos, rats, and ants. The mosaic pattern created by the burns provides a variety of habitats, from open grassland to denser wooded areas, which supports a higher overall biodiversity. This traditional fire management also increases the availability of culturally important plants, such as the pequi (Caryocar brasiliense), a fruit-bearing tree whose pulp is a traditional food source with known anti-inflammatory properties.
