A Landscape of Ancient Geometry
In the Brazilian state of Acre, deforestation since the 1980s has unexpectedly revealed a vast network of ancient earthworks. More than 500 of these structures, called geoglyphs, have been documented across an area of approximately 13,000 square kilometers. These are not small markings; they are monumental constructions. The ditches measure up to 11 meters (36 feet) wide and 4 meters (13 feet) deep, forming precise geometric shapes like squares, circles, U-forms and octagons. Individual enclosures range from 100 to 300 meters (330 to 980 feet) in diameter.
First documented by archaeologist Ondemar Dias in 1977, the scale of this pre-Columbian society was only understood once satellite imagery became widely available. Radiocarbon dating indicates the structures were built and used over a long period, generally between 2,500 and 650 years ago. The builders excavated these massive trenches using only stone and wood tools, moving enormous quantities of earth to create a highly structured landscape that remained hidden by the forest for centuries.
The purpose of the geoglyphs is still debated among archaeologists. Excavations reveal very few artifacts within the enclosures, which suggests they were not permanent villages. The construction, with ditches and banks, does not appear to be designed for defense. The leading hypothesis is that these were ceremonial spaces, used for periodic gatherings and rituals. The geometric precision and occasional astronomical alignments suggest a ceremonial or symbolic function.
A Forest Transformed
A surprising finding from soil analysis is that these earthworks were not built in a pristine, untouched rainforest. Paleoecological research using phytoliths (microscopic plant fossils) and charcoal samples shows that the builders inhabited an already altered landscape. The region has been a bamboo-dominated forest for at least 6,000 years, but evidence of burning and forest clearing begins around 4,000 years ago.
Instead of clear-cutting vast areas, the geoglyph builders created smaller, temporary clearings for their constructions. They actively managed the surrounding forest, encouraging the growth of useful species like palm trees, which provided food and building materials. This created a mosaic of managed forest, or "abandoned gardens," and not the widespread deforestation seen today. This long-term, low-impact land use demonstrates a sophisticated relationship between these ancient societies and their forest environment, unlike modern land-clearing practices.
