A Landscape Built by Water
Bananal Island is the largest river island on the planet, with a total area of 19,162 square kilometers. It measures approximately 320 kilometers long and 55 kilometers wide. The island exists because of the specific geology of the Araguaia River. Flowing across a very flat sedimentary basin, the river's gradient is low, causing it to slow down and deposit its heavy sediment load. This deposition created a massive alluvial fan that eventually grew large enough to split the river into two main channels: the larger Araguaia River to the west and the smaller Javaés River to the east. These two rivers flow parallel for hundreds of kilometers before rejoining, enclosing the landmass of the island.
The island's formation is an active and continuous process of fluvial sedimentation. The Araguaia is a sandy anabranching system, meaning its sediment load is up to 57% sand. During the rainy season from October to March, the river's discharge swells, carrying vast quantities of sand, silt, and clay downstream. As the waters spread across the floodplain, their velocity drops, and the sediment is deposited. This process constantly builds, erodes, and reshapes the island's features, including its banks, sandbars, and over 80 internal lakes. This dynamic environment is a direct result of the balance between sediment supply and the river's energy.
An Ecosystem in Flux
The island's ecology is defined by the annual flood pulse, which can raise the water level by up to 8 meters and inundate huge areas for as long as five months. This seasonal rhythm creates a mosaic of distinct habitats. It is a transitional zone between the Amazon rainforest to the north and the Cerrado savanna to the south. The vegetation includes flooded forests (igapós), grasslands (varjões), and dense dry forests. This habitat diversity supports an immense variety of wildlife.
The area is home for mammals like jaguars, giant otters, maned wolves, and marsh deer. The rivers and lakes have Amazon river dolphins, black caimans, and giant river turtles. Recognized as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance since 1993, the island's northern third is protected as the Araguaia National Park, established in 1959. The southern two-thirds are designated as indigenous territories, preserving the connection between the land and its people.
The entire island population is indigenous, comprising several distinct groups, including the Karajá, Javaé, Ava-Canoeiro, and Tuxá peoples who reside in about sixteen villages. These communities have adapted their way of life to the river's cycles. Their settlement patterns, resource use, and cultural traditions are intrinsically linked to the seasonal availability of fish and fertile land left behind by the receding floodwaters. The Karajá, for instance, are known for their distinctive ceramic dolls, the Ritxòkò, which are recognized as a cultural heritage of Brazil.
