A Scottish enterprise on the Yangon River
Across the Bago River from Yangon lies the Thanlyin-Kyauktan area, a place layered with industrial and military history. Here, the remains of a sprawling shipyard are a massive colonial-era enterprise: the Irrawaddy Flotilla Company (IFC). Founded by Scottish merchants in 1865, the IFC grew to become the largest fleet of inland river steamers in the world. At its peak in the late 1920s, it operated over 600 vessels, transporting millions of passengers and over a million tons of cargo annually along Myanmar's rivers.
This vast fleet required a dedicated industrial base for assembly and maintenance. While the company headquarters were in Rangoon (now Yangon), the main shipyards were established at Dalla and later at Thanlyin (formerly known as Syriam). The ships themselves were a product of Scottish engineering, primarily designed and built by William Denny and Brothers of Dumbarton. In a remarkable feat of logistics, vessels were constructed on the River Clyde in Scotland, disassembled, and then shipped in pieces to Myanmar for reassembly by local and Scottish engineers. The Thanlyin shipyard was the final link in this intercontinental production line, essential for controlling the riverine arteries of British Burma.
The teak engineering problem
Shipbuilding at Thanlyin presented a unique materials science challenge centered on its primary building material: Burmese teak (Tectona grandis). Teak was prized for its incredible durability and natural resistance to water, rot and insects, thanks to its high concentration of natural oils and silica. These properties made it an ideal material for the harsh conditions of a tropical river system. However, teak also has an unusual physical property—it is remarkably buoyant, even when green and unseasoned.
This high buoyancy posed a specific problem during a ship's launch. A vessel constructed with a standard European slipway design could become unstable and prematurely buoyant as its teak hull entered the water, risking damage. Archaeological investigations of the abandoned Thanlyin site reveal the engineering solutions to this problem. The slipways were constructed with a much shallower gradient than their European counterparts to ensure a controlled and stable launch. The foundations for the cranes are evidence of being heavily reinforced. These cranes had to lift and precisely position the massive, pre-fabricated iron and steel sections of the paddle steamers that were sent from Scotland, integrating them with the locally constructed teak elements. The entire shipyard was a purpose-built facility, engineered specifically to accommodate the unique physical properties of teak wood.
