A Gilded Giant
The Shwedagon Pagoda’s main stupa rises 99 meters over Yangon, its brick core entirely sheathed in gold. Estimates of the total amount of gold vary, ranging from 27 to 60 metric tons. This is not a single layer, but thousands of solid gold plates and leaves attached with traditional rivets. The lower part of the stupa is plated with 8,688 solid gold bars, while the upper part has 13,153. This immense structure stands on Singuttara Hill, 51 meters above the city, making its total height from sea level about 170 meters.
This display of wealth faces a persistent chemical enemy: the weather. Yangon has a tropical monsoon climate with an average annual humidity of 74%. During the wettest months, like August, humidity can reach nearly 90%, coupled with an average rainfall of 602 mm. These conditions are highly corrosive for many metals. The gold plates themselves are often applied over a copper base, which is particularly vulnerable to damage from salty, humid air. Pure gold is highly resistant to corrosion, but the sheer scale and composite nature of the pagoda's gilding present a unique material science challenge.
An Alloy's Armor
The longevity of the Shwedagon's golden shell is due to the composition of the gold leaf itself. The gold is not pure but an alloy containing other metals, including zinc. This addition is essential to its survival in the humid environment. Zinc is more chemically reactive than gold. When exposed to oxygen and moisture in the atmosphere, the zinc atoms on the surface of the alloy preferentially oxidize.
This process, known as passivation, creates a microscopic, transparent layer of zinc oxide or zinc hydroxide on the surface. This film is extremely thin but very stable and non-reactive. It forms a protective barrier that seals the gold and other metals within the alloy from the corrosive effects of the humid air. This self-healing shield prevents the underlying copper and the gold itself from tarnishing or degrading. The entire stupa is regilded approximately every five years, a process that involves meticulously replacing thousands of gold plates and leaves to ensure the integrity of the structure and its brilliant surface.
