An Arctic Metropolis on the Move
The Taymyr Peninsula in Siberia hosts the largest wild reindeer herd on Earth. This population of Siberian Tundra Reindeer, Rangifer tarandus sibiricus, has experienced dramatic fluctuations. In the 1950s, the herd numbered around 110,000 individuals. By 2000, its population peaked at an estimated one million animals. Since then, the numbers have seen a sharp decline, with a 2021 survey counting approximately 240,000 individuals. Researchers project the population could fall to 70,000 by 2025 if current trends continue.
This vast herd occupies a range of about 1.5 million square kilometers. Each year, the reindeer undertake one of the planet's most formidable land migrations. They travel from their wintering grounds in the taiga forest, south of the peninsula, to their summer calving and grazing areas on the Arctic tundra. The total annual migration can cover up to 5,000 kilometers, the longest of any terrestrial mammal. Scientists use satellite collars to track the herd's movements, which have shown that migration routes can shift by as much as 220 kilometers in a single season. This immense seasonal journey is timed to coincide with the growth of vegetation, providing the necessary food for mothers and their newborn calves.
A Precarious Balance
The herd's survival is intrinsically linked to its primary winter food source: lichen. Reindeer possess a unique enzyme, lichenase, that allows them to digest this tough organism and extract important glucose. However, lichen species like Cladonia rangiferina grow extremely slowly, at an average rate of 3 to 5 millimeters per year. This slow regeneration means that overgrazing can decimate their food supply for decades. The entire ecosystem is fragile, and the reindeer population is an indicator of its health.
Multiple pressures are impacting the herd. Industrial pollution from enterprises like the "Norilsky Nickel" company releases thousands of tons of contaminants, including sulfur dioxide, which has created a 6,000 square kilometer "dead forest" and destroyed lichen pastures near the city of Norilsk. Climate change disrupts the timing of the migration; rivers thaw earlier, and newborn calves, unable to cross the wide, fast-flowing water, often perish from hypothermia or are abandoned. In one instance, a herd arrived at the Khatanga River a month earlier than usual, leading to the loss of up to 200 calves. Illegal hunting also poses a significant threat, with poaching estimates reaching five times the official limit in some years.
