A forest at a crossroads
The Sikhote-Alin mountain range stretches for over 1,200 kilometers along Russia's Pacific coast, forming an ecological meeting point. Here, the vast Siberian taiga from the north overlaps with subtropical ecosystems from the south. This convergence creates one of the unusual temperate forests in the world, where northern species like lynx live alongside southern animals like the Amur tiger. Forests cover more than 90% of the area, which largely avoided glaciation during the last ice age, allowing for the survival of many relict and endemic species.
The "cloud forest" effect results from the regional climate. In summer, monsoons from the Sea of Japan carry warm, moist air inland. As this air rises into the cooler elevations of the Sikhote-Alin, which average around 1,000 meters, the moisture condenses into a persistent fog. This fog drips from the dense canopy of Korean pine (Pinus koraiensis), Manchurian fir (Abies holophylla), and broadleaf trees, providing a consistent source of water for the ecosystem. This environment supports a diversity of plant life, with over 1,200 vascular plant species recorded.
The last apex predator assembly
Sikhote-Alin is the place on Earth where three large, often competing apex predators naturally coexist. The Amur tiger (Panthera tigris altaica), the Amur leopard (Panthera pardus orientalis), and the Ussuri brown bear (Ursus arctos lasiotus) all share this habitat. The region also has a significant population of Asiatic black bears (Ursus thibetanus). This assemblage is possible due to the sheer size and ecological richness of the forest, which allows for a degree of niche partitioning.
Tigers often hunt larger prey like red deer and wild boar in the lower-elevation valleys. Brown bears, while powerful enough to challenge tigers for kills, are omnivores with a broader diet. The critically endangered Amur leopard, one of the rarest cats in the world, tends to favor steeper, rockier terrain. Despite this separation, interactions occur; tigers are known to prey on bears, and large brown bears will steal kills from tigers. The entire ecosystem is balanced. to protect this biodiversity, a vast area of the central Sikhote-Alin was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2001, and it was significantly expanded in 2018.
