The dawn of our species
In the remote southwestern Omo River valley of Ethiopia, a collection of fossilized bones shows the origins of Homo sapiens. Known as the Omo Kibish remains, these fossils are the oldest undisputed evidence of our species. A 2022 study established their minimum age at a staggering 233,000 years.
Their dating is a geological study. The fossils were discovered in 1967 by a team led by Richard Leakey within the Omo Kibish Formation, a deep sequence of river and lake sediments intertwined with layers of volcanic ash. For decades, their precise age was uncertain, with estimates hovering around 195,000 years. The breakthrough came not from the bones themselves, but from the volcanic layers sandwiching them.
Scientists were able to match the chemical fingerprint of a thick ash layer above the fossils to a specific, colossal eruption of the Shala volcano, located more than 400 kilometers away. By dating pumice samples from the Shala volcano to 233,000 years ago, researchers established a "older than" date for the Omo remains. Since the bones were found in a deeper, older layer of sediment, they must be at least that old. This redating pushed back the fossil record for Homo sapiens in eastern Africa by at least 36,000 years.
Omo I and Omo II
The initial 1967 expedition uncovered two partial skulls and skeletons, designated Omo I and Omo II. Found in the same sedimentary layer, they are considered to be of similar age. However, they display intriguing physical differences.
Omo I possesses features that are modern. These include a tall, rounded (globular) cranial vault and a well-defined chin—hallmarks of Homo sapiens. In contrast, the Omo II cranium appears more archaic, with a more primitive shape that has led to scientific debate about its classification. This variation within a single ancient population suggests that the evolution of modern human traits was a complex process. The presence of both modern and archaic features at the same time and place shows the diversity that existed in early Homo sapiens populations.
The fossils were found within Member I of the Kibish Formation, a 105-meter-thick sequence of sediments deposited by ancient lakes and deltas. This region, part of the East African Rift valley, was volcanically active, which, while hazardous for its inhabitants, provided the ash layers that make modern dating possible. The environment 200,000 years ago was likely a mix of grasslands and woodlands sustained by a reliable water supply, supporting a range of large mammals and fish.
