An Ancestor's Face
In 1986, a team led by paleontologists Richard and Meave Leakey discovered a remarkable fossil at a site called Kalodirr, west of Lake Turkana. The specimen, designated KNM-WK 16999, was a nearly complete cranium of an ancient ape species new to science: Afropithecus turkanensis. Radiometric dating of the geological layers placed the fossil between 16 and 18 million years old, rooting it firmly in the Miocene epoch. A total of 46 specimens from the site would eventually give a fuller picture of this primate.
The skull's structure was immediately striking. It featured a long, pronounced snout and large, forward-protruding incisors. Most significantly, the molar teeth were coated in a thick layer of enamel. This feature distinguished Afropithecus from earlier Miocene apes like Proconsul and made it the oldest-known hominoid with this dental characteristic. The combination of a primitive facial structure with this advanced dental trait suggested a unique adaptation among early apes.
A Diet of Hard Knocks
The anatomy of Afropithecus provides clear clues about its lifestyle. The thick molar enamel, combined with a robustly built skull and massive jaws, points to a diet of hard or tough-skinned foods. Scientists call this sclerocarpic foraging, a diet centered on hard-shelled fruits and nuts. This ape was built to crush and process items that its thinner-enamelled relatives could not. Its powerful canines may also have been used to break open tough fruit casings, a function seen in some modern South American monkeys.
Its body was similar in many ways to Proconsul, suggesting it was an arboreal quadruped that spent its life in the trees. Its locomotion was likely slow and powerful, adapted for careful climbing rather than swift leaping. This dietary specialization is a shift from the soft-fruit diets of more ancient apes and was likely an important adaptation for survival in the changing Miocene environment. Afropithecus demonstrates a major evolutionary experiment in ape history, adapting to new, more challenging food sources.
