The arrival
Each year on the coast of Odisha, hundreds of thousands of female Olive Ridley sea turtles (Lepidochelys olivacea) gather for one of the most remarkable events in the natural world. This synchronized, mass nesting is called an "arribada," Spanish for "arrival." Gahirmatha beach, the world's largest nesting ground for this species, is the site of this incredible biological phenomenon. The gathering is so immense that estimates have ranged from 100,000 to 800,000 nesting females in a single season.
The arribada is exclusive to the two species in the Lepidochelys genus, the Olive Ridley and the Kemp's Ridley turtle. Females haul their 45 kg bodies onto the sand, typically over a period of five to seven days, to excavate a nest. Using their rear flippers, they dig a conical chamber about 45 cm deep. Inside, each female deposits a clutch of about 100 to 120 eggs, which resemble white ping-pong balls. The entire nesting process takes less than an hour. After covering the nest, the female returns to the sea, providing no further parental care.
A mystery of synchrony
The precise mechanism that triggers an arribada is still being studied. Researchers have investigated cues ranging from lunar cycles and offshore winds to the release of pheromones by the turtles themselves, but no single factor explains the phenomenon. One hypothesis involves embryonic diapause. Studies suggest that Olive Ridley embryos have a unique ability to pause their development while still inside the mother's oviduct, allowing females to wait and synchronize their nesting with the larger group. This capability appears more pronounced in eggs from arribada nests compared to those from solitary nesters.
This mass nesting strategy is thought to be an evolutionary response to predation. By emerging all at once, the sheer number of eggs and subsequent hatchlings overwhelms predators like birds, crabs, and foxes. This "predator satiation" ensures that a higher percentage of the offspring survive their perilous journey from the nest to the sea. After an incubation period of 45 to 60 days, the hatchlings emerge and instinctively crawl towards the brightest horizon, which is the open ocean. The temperature of the sand during incubation determines their sex; warmer temperatures produce more females, while cooler sand results in more males.
