A battlefield reclaimed by time
In early 1852, the Second Anglo-Burmese War began, a conflict driven by the British East India Company's commercial interests. The war, lasting from April 1852 to January 1853, ended with the British annexation of the province of Pegu in Lower Burma. Historical knowledge of the war's battles, such as the fighting that occurred around the village of Mokpalin, comes almost entirely from British military records. These accounts often provide a one-sided view of the events. The physical battlefield itself, with its hastily dug trenches, wooden stockades, and artillery positions, was quickly reclaimed by subtropical vegetation and agriculture, erasing the site of the conflict.
The Burmese army of the period was estimated to be around 50,000 strong. Its regular soldiers were identifiable by red jackets and distinctive spiked helmets constructed of lacquered bamboo. British forces, led by General Henry Godwin, included units such as the 51st (2nd Yorkshire West Riding) Light Infantry and the 18th (Royal Irish) Regiment. They methodically captured important locations including Martaban, Rangoon, and Pegu. The conflict archaeology at Mokpalin provides a method to reconstruct the battle's events from the ground up, offering details that were never recorded in official histories.
Digital eyes on the past
Modern archaeology can reveal features of a landscape that are unseen by the naked eye. Using remote sensing techniques, researchers can map buried evidence of past human activity without disturbing the ground. Satellite imagery, for example, can detect subtle differences in soil moisture and vegetation health. A long-gone defensive ditch may hold more moisture than the surrounding earth, causing the plants growing above it to appear slightly different in multispectral images. These spectral anomalies, when mapped, can trace the exact outline of a forgotten fort or trench system.
At Mokpalin, this non-invasive approach allows for the reconstruction of the Burmese defensive layout. The survey identified the faint but clear lines of earthworks and stockades that correspond to the 1852-1853 conflict. Further analysis using ground-penetrating radar, a method that sends radio waves into the ground to map subsurface structures, can provide a three-dimensional view of these buried features. This creates a detailed map of the battlefield before any excavation begins, guiding the physical investigation and preserving the site's integrity.
Reading the debris of conflict
Once the battlefield's layout is mapped, the distribution of artifacts tells the human story of the fight. A systematic survey of the surface, with archaeologists walking in grids, recovers the small objects left behind. The location of every lead musket ball, uniform button, and pottery sherd is recorded with GPS. Plotting this data reveals patterns that decode the battle's progression. A dense cluster of dropped British musket balls can indicate a primary firing line. A scatter of Burmese equipment fragments might show the location of a defensive position that was ultimately overrun.
This evidence allows for a more granular reconstruction of events than written records alone. It can confirm or challenge the official narratives, showing precisely where the fighting was most intense and how troops maneuvered under fire. The archaeological data reveals the tactical reality on the ground, a perspective entirely absent from the historical accounts written by distant commanders. The survey essentially shows the history of the site itself, telling a story of the conflict written in soil and rust.
