The geology of improbable balance
The Kyaiktiyo Pagoda, or Golden Rock, is a granite boulder measuring 7.6 meters (25 feet) high with a circumference of 15 meters (50 feet). Its estimated weight is an impressive 611.5 tons. The rock sits at an elevation of 1,100 meters (3,609 feet) atop Mount Kyaiktiyo, part of the Eastern Yoma mountains. This geological feature formed from deep-time processes. The granite itself is an igneous rock, formed millions of years ago when molten magma cooled slowly deep within the Earth's crust.
Over eons, weathering and erosion wore away the surrounding, softer rock, gradually exposing the more resistant granite boulder. This process of spheroidal weathering, where chemical weathering attacks exposed rock from all sides, tends to round large, blocky stones into spherical or ovoid shapes. The placement is the result of these slow, persistent natural forces. The rock's final position is a geological accident, where its center of mass is located directly above the minimal contact point with the bedrock below, creating a stable equilibrium. Despite its appearance, the boulder has withstood numerous earthquakes in this tectonically active region.
